Let people know you're moving
Compile a list of people and organisations that need to know your change of address. When you have a confirmed move date notify the relevant parties in writing by email or letter at least 10 days before. They may include:
- Bank/credit card/finance companies
- Pensions, private healthcare, life insurance providers
- Savings and investment companies
- Home insurance
- Suppliers: water, gas, electricity, phone, mobile phone, broadband, TV license and digital suppliers
- Car: DVLA for driving licence and vehicle registration, car insurance, MOT, breakdown service
- Passport office
- Health: doctor, dentist, optician
- School/college
- Leisure: magazine subscriptions, gym and club membership, mailing lists, friends, loyalty schemes
- Services: window cleaner/gardener
Redirect your post
It is recommended that in order to reduce the risk of identity fraud when you move house, you use Royal Mail's Redirection Service to direct your mail from your old address to your new one for at least a year.
You can apply online at www.royalmail.com/redirection or at any branch of the Post Office. Allow 5 days for this to be set up.
Arranging care for pets and children
Sort out who's going to care for your children and pets so you can concentrate on the move itself and avoid them getting under your feet.
Transferring your telephone
Arrange to move your existing number or be connected to a new number on the day you move. Try and arrange connection at both properties or have a mobile phone available at either end to help communication on the day of the move.
Accommodation
If you've got a long way to travel, you might want to book overnight accommodation.
Insurance
Contact your home insurer to make sure you have insurance to cover your belongings during the move.
Cancel all deliveries
Such as milk and newspapers.
Prepare information for the new owner
Help the new owners feel at home by jotting down important information they'll need to know: how aspects like the burglar alarm work for example, and where items like the water meter are located. Label up keys including the garage, shed and window keys so they're not fumbling for hours trying to work out which key is which!

The last thing you'll want to think about once you've moved is doing the grocery shopping. Why not order online in advance by picking a convenient slot and we'll deliver to you. Just remember to change your address if you're an existing customer!
